Job Summary A key member of the University's central IT team, you will provide an authoritative technical expertise and resource to design and manage the operation, performance and security of the enterprise wide applications, server and desktop infrastructure.
This is a sizeable operation, with 15000 staff/student accounts and 3000 desktops, so you will have already thrived in an environment servicing 500+ users.
Your experience should have included: - systems management of large scale desktop deployments - performance and capacity monitoring and optimisation - security management, configuration installation and upgrades We expect you to have an in depth understanding and knowledge of server and desktop infrastructure and Operating Systems and their management, including Windows, Linux, VMWARE and Citrix technologies.
In addition you will have had specific experience of: - Redhat - Oracle / MySQL / SQL - Apple desktop - Various mobile platforms You'll take pride in delivering quality services, ensuring that ethos resonates right throughout your team and enhances the department's reputation across the organisation.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.
The advertised salary includes a market supplement of £8759 per annum (pro rata).
This supplement is reviewed biennially and may be amended or withdrawn in line with agreed University pay policies Closing date: 2 March 2018 Job Description RESPONSIBLE TO: Operations & Support Team Leader RESPONSIBLE FOR: The mentoring and support of the systems engineers PURPOSE OF THE POST Provide a senior and authoritative technical expertise and resource to manage the operation, performance and security of the University’s enterprise wide applications, server and desktop infrastructure.
Principal Duties Develop infrastructure monitoring procedures that allow for the effective and wherever possible automated monitoring of server and desktop infrastructure performance, capacity, availability and security status.
Define key technical standards and policies in relation to the service management of server and desktop infrastructure.
To ensure work is delivered in accordance to the above standards, policies and procedures and to provide training and guidance as required to IT staff within and outwith IT Services.
To receive and resolve reported incidents and problems in relation to server and desktop infrastructure, generally delegating these to be resolved by more junior colleagues under supervision.
To review and assess upgrades and security patches for server and desktop infrastructure, recommend to and agree with the Operations and Support Team Lead, which ones should be implemented and arrange for these to be scheduled and implemented.
To provide a high level of technical expertise to resolve complex incidents and problems where other staff are unable to provide a resolution.
Initiative and problem solving – to use their knowledge and IT expertise in the relevant areas to create and implement solutions to problems where no prescribed solutions exist.
Managing short-term projects – management of short term pieces of work activity where rapid response; or working at short notice and pulling together of resources is required.
To provide a high level of technical expertise to lead scheduled testing of disaster planning and recovery procedures and ensure that relevant technical documentation and procedures are current.
