Job description

Duties & Responsabilities : Group Legal & Compliance team of ArcelorMittal is looking for a senior legal counsel (minimum 7 to 12 years post graduate experience) providing high-quality legal services to several companies of the ArcelorMittal group. Your main responsibility will be to give timely and efficient legal advice to the business regarding environmental, sustainability and climate issues and strategies.

The position requires a strong knowledge in various areas of environmental law, sustainability, climate change and decarbonization.

Main responsibilities:

• Take a leading role in development of corporate strategy and support corporate functions in connection with sustainability, climate change, decarbonization and environmental law:

• Provide legal support to day-to-day business related to environmental, sustainability and climate issues, strategies and projects (for European and international issues) of the AM operations and AM's activities in Europe and outside Europe, in support or in close cooperation with the relevant Country Legal teams.

• Protect and defend business interest in dispute resolution scenarios related to environmental, sustainability, climate change and international trade, including developing a strategy and assess any settlement option.

• Attend internal and external meetings with third party stakeholders and, where appropriate, assist directly in negotiation with third parties.

• Actively supporting international legal initiatives. Regularly sharing best practices, new challenges or developments, innovations and efficiency related projects.  

• Stay up to date on regulatory and legal changes.

• Negotiate with internal and external stakeholders, suppliers, as well as authorities.

• Collaborate with other Legal team members and other internal stakeholders dealing with environmental, sustainability and climate issues to exchange on best practices.

• Identify, develop and deliver legal trainings to the business.

Education : • Master's degree in law.

Skills & Specifications : • The willingness and capability to be a “hands-on” lawyer, to analyze and solve complex legal issues, with a proactive, energetic and enthusiastic approach.

• The willingness to develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with ArcelorMittal, ArcelorMittal's businesses, its people, markets, facilities and customers.

• Ability to understand priorities and to see the bigger picture, self-reliant, self-responsible, know to seek help when needed.

• Being a good team player, loyal and transparent is key.

• Strong communications skills: ability to effectively communicate in an international environment, with various stakeholders.

Work experience requirements : • You have obtained a relevant experience of minimum 7 to 12 years preferable in an international law firm and/or as inhouse counsel; experience in industry (either steel, cement, oil&gas, etc) would be an asset.

• The position requires experience in the 2 following fields:

• European and International Environmental Law (the main international treaties and EU Legal instruments related to climate change, CCUS, energy, etc.), and

• Main ESG reporting regulations (CSRD, GRI, etc)

Languages :  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of another European language will be an asset.
