Department of Physics at Chalmers - home of the Graphene Flagship

The department is the major part of Gothenburg Physics Centre – a collaboration between five departments at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.

Information about the research/the project/the division

The main part of the research will deal with characterization of zirconium alloys. One part of the project is devoted to the understanding of the influence of neutron irradiation on oxidation, hydrogen up-take and mechanical properties. The second part is focused on coated zirconium alloys, in order to make nuclear power plants safer.

The research at the Division of Materials Microstructure can be grouped into four material areas; hard materials, high temperature materials, functional materials and nuclear materials, and the current project belongs to the forth area. In most projects at the division, the relationship between microstructure and properties are studied using advanced characterization techniques, including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. Typically, the influence of heat treatment, production parameters and in-service conditions (high temperatures, corrosive environment, radiation, mechanical load, etc.) on the relation between properties and microstructure is studied. The division often has close cooperation with industry, as well as with research groups specialized in complimentary experimental techniques or modeling. Major responsibilities

The candidate will carry out experimental work using electron microscopy and atom probe tomography on zirconium alloys. The results will be reported at international and national project meetings, at conferences and in scientific journals.

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Position summary

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


Master of Science in Engineering Physics, Physics, Materials Science or Chemistry, or equivalent.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. 

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
