Descripción de la oferta de trabajo:

The Climate and Energy Policy Division at DTU's Department of Technology, Management and Economics offers a PhD position in the Energy Economics and Modelling section. The section conducts research on how to upgrade and operate energy systems and markets with large amounts of variable renewable energy at the lowest possible societal cost. The co-supervisor of the PhD project is at DTU Sustain, Section for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA). The section is an international leader in the development and application of life-cycle based methods for absolute environmental sustainability assessment.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated engineer (or similar) who wants to contribute to a sustainable transition of the energy sector - and is eager to participate in cutting-edge research on implementation of planetary boundaries and absolute sustainability in energy system models.

The PhD position is fully financed by DTU as one out of several strategic PhD positions supporting the realization of DTU's ambitions in sustainability and transformative digitalization. This project particularly contributes to sustainability goals and is expected to advance state-of-the-art in both energy system modeling (ESM) and life cycle assessment (LCA). A holistic assessment framework will be developed, expanding beyond direct emissions of greenhouse gases from the energy system to a life cycle perspective of impacts on all planetary boundaries, including prospective LCA's of future energy technologies, flexible operation and synergies. As such, the project will use energy systems modeling to explore different viable configurations of energy systems constrained by planetary boundaries.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The PhD will have two major focus points:

  • Using quantitative methods, including energy system modeling and LCA, you will explore implementation of planetary boundaries and absolute sustainability assessment in energy system models. The field of research will include focus on the sustainability of green fuels including bio-fuels and PtX.
  • In line with the research described above, you will also contribute to developing and applying methods for developing the prospective LCA framework with inputs from energy system modeling.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Furthermore, strong English communication skills are essential. Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to seek and share knowledge, willing and able to work independently and in a team.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Assessment

The ideal candidate would have:

  • A master's degree in engineering or natural sciences with a focus on energy system analysis or similar.
  • Experience with energy system modeling- ideally of large scale multiple country energy systems, PtX and renewable fuel production
  • Experience with LCA and ideally knowledge about planetary boundaries and absolute sustainability assessment
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • A willingness and desire to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching.
  • Good programming capabilities in advanced analysis software (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Julia, or similar) and mathematical optimization suites (e.g., GAMS, Pyomo, JuMP, or similar).

The main energy system model which will be applied will be the Balmorel model, so experience with this tool (or similar tools) will be an advantage.
