Descripción de la oferta de trabajo:

A PhD position, starting September 1 2020 or as soon as possible after that, is available in the area of electrolyte thermodynamics. The duration of the position is three years.

When ions appear in a solution, they may drastically alter the properties and can even induce phase splitting. The amounts of salts appearing in each system may depend on size, polarity, and especially on the degree of ion pairing in the case of non-aqueous solvents. Such phenomena are not currently well understood and no thermodynamic models accurately predict this behaviour.

The candidate will collect relevant experimental data (e.g. mixed solvent-salts VLE/LLE and conductivity) and will review thermodynamic models, which have been applied for multi-phase equilibrium in which two or more liquid phases may appear together with electrolytes from salts or formed by dissociation. The candidate will next investigate the role of ion pairing on liquid-liquid equilibrium, and relate to direct or indirect experimental data for this phenomena (e.g. conductivity). The final target will be to implement the ion pairing concept in the electrolyte CPA equation of state and predict multi-phase equilibria for electrolyte systems with emphasis on liquid-liquid equilibria for systems containing salts and mixed solvents.

Responsibilities and tasks

The appointment will be at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (Center for Energy Resources Engineering). The project is carried out as a part of the ERC Advanced Grant ('New Paradigm in Electrolyte Thermodynamics') and is expected to involve travels and interactions with other researchers employed under the same project. The project aims at reconciling various modeling approaches for modeling electrolyte thermodynamics. The project is carried out in close collaboration and supervision from researchers from Hafnium Labs (Drs. Bjørn Maribo-Mogensen and Darren Rowland), a startup specializing in physical property prediction, located in Copenhagen.
