About Last Mile Climate

Changing the humanitarian system to effectively address climate change is complex. Over the past decade, well-intended aid organisations have tried yet mostly failed to make substantive progress and needed change at scale. Last Mile Climate is set up as a new kind of humanitarian NGO and offers an alternative: we are solely focused on catalysing genuine public-private partnerships to deliver direct change with last mile communities, including displaced people and host communities in Africa. Our approach moves past the bureaucracy and inefficiency of old systems that has prevented true collaboration with private sector companies and importantly has Last Mile Climate take on the role as an independent Systemic Intermediary. This enables us to initiate high-impact Climate Action Partnership ecosystems, that drive large-scale climate action within e.g. clean cooking; waste management; and nature-based solutions for adaptation. We call our approach “Climate Action Partnerships”.

Our team has the combination of lived experience and deep understanding of the humanitarian sector from within. All our field team members have experienced life as refugees or the effects of climate change in last mile communities and future staffing will seek to continue this. The organisation has the leadership, network and vision to drive systems change at the international level.

The mission of Last Mile Climate is to exclusively be a facilitating and partnership-enabling NGO that sets up public-private partnerships to bridge the systemic gaps between last mile communities, the private sector, national governments, climate organisations, and humanitarian actors. The vision underpinning this mission is in many ways a simple one: from a fully funded and independent vantage point to bring relevant actors together to deliver radical collaboration on climate action for last mile communities. Underneath this simplicity are layers of complexity: how to effectively bring actors together and motivate change? What political and policy changes are needed? How can market facilitation be achieved? Which forms of localization work most effectively? How can direct investment with last mile actors reduce the threats and impacts of climate change?

We hope you are interested in being part of this journey through the role described below.

Job Title: Grants Manager

Location: Denmark: Home-based and/or co-working office (flexible, but with requirement to meet with supervisor on average once per week in Copenhagen area)

Working time: 25-37 hours per week (negotiable)

Duration: As soon as possible until the end of 2027 (with possibilities for extension)

Overview: We are looking for an experienced Grants Manager to oversee the financial integrity of our Climate Action Partnerships programme, supported by the IKEA Foundation and the Robert Bosch Foundation. This role encompasses comprehensive management of finances, including budgeting, financial reporting, and the administration of cash awards to implementing partner organisations, most of which are Refugee-Led organizations in East Africa. Based on the qualifications of the selected candidate, the role would also include work related to Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Coordination and Communication, Compliance and Reporting, Risk Management, and Capacity Building.

The job may involve some travel (e.g. to East Africa), but this is negotiable. We are very much a born digital/remote organization and try to handle most workshops and meetings through virtual means.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with donors and grantee organizations, manage all aspects of financial reporting and budget processes for the Climate Action Partnership programme.
  • Oversee the disbursement and management of cash awards in target countries (Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda).
  • Maintain rigorous financial controls and develop/maintain policies to mitigate risks related to financial mismanagement and fraud.
  • Engage in project management, communication, compliance, risk management and capacity building of colleagues and partners.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would likely have some of the below skills, but even if you don’t strictly fulfil them, we highly encourage you to apply if you believe you have what it takes to help us drive financial and grant management excellence in delivering climate action that supports last mile communities in the global south.

  • More than 5 years of experience, ideally in finance or project administration, and ideally within the non-profit, humanitarian, or climate sectors.
  • Strong background in financial reporting and budget management in humanitarian or development sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, accounting, or related field; additional financial management training is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in English (Danish not required).
  • Digital literacy and willingness to learn more, particularly around how we use AI to optimize our processes
  • Applicants with lived experience of displacement and/or impacts of climate change in the global south are particularly encouraged to apply.

What we can offer you if you join our mission:

  • A truly purpose-driven job within an exciting and high-growth global start-up NGO where you will have a chance to significantly influence the organisation’s development and our long-term impact for climate-affected populations in the global south.
  • A non-bureaucratic and non-hierarchical workplace
  • Colleagues from around the world, the majority of whom have lived experience from forced displacement and/or the impacts of climate change on communities in the global south
  • Engagement with a network of some of the world’s most innovative organizations and individuals that we partner with
  • Competitive salary and benefit package tailored to mutually agreeable needs and working hours.

Application: Interested candidates are requested to submit their CV (max 1 page) plus a cover letter (max 1 page) highlighting their relevant experience, qualifications and motivation to infolastmileclimate.org. Please write "Grants Manager" in the subject line. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further evaluation and we bring in applicants on a rolling basis, so please submit your application as soon as possible and no later than the deadline.
