The Mike Williams Memorial Graduate Internship in Marine Science Communication

Funded by the Marine Institute

Location:        Galway City Museum, Spanish Parade, Galway.

Duration:        Temporary Fixed-Term, Fixed-Purpose 50 weeks

Galway City Museum

Galway City Museum was originally founded in the 1970s and occupied Comerford House, an early 19th century house adjacent to the Spanish Arch.  It closed in 2004 and was replaced by a new purpose-built museum on a site next-door and which opened in April 2007. The new Galway City Museum project was an initiative of Galway City Council to advance the cultural and heritage life of Galway City. In the last fourteen years the team at the museum developed exhibitions that can be viewed on three floors – the ground floor Archaeology Galleries; the first floor History Galleries and the second floor Sea Science Galleriesy.

A successful temporary exhibition programme is also mounted every year, and each quarter there is an interesting education and events programme that is designed to appeal to all ages and all interests.

The City Museum has a current staff of nine full-time staff members and an active Volunteer Programme. The Graduate Intern will bring the staff number to ten.

This role is funded by The Marine Institute, the State agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation in Ireland.

Duties:

The Graduate Intern appointed will be responsible, on a day to day basis, for the Sea Science gallery. The Graduate Intern will be based on the floor, providing a point of contact, tour guide and source of information for visitors to ‘The Wild Atlantic -Sea Science’ gallery.

The Graduate Intern will be required to facilitate tours of the ‘The Wild Atlantic – Sea Science’ gallery and to provide interpretive and explanatory information about each of the exhibits (training will be provided).

This role will contribute to the design and delivery ofr exhibits, events and communication initiatives that promote the marine environment and the impact of the ocean on the climate.

The Graduate Intern may also facilitate educational workshops, develop additional educational material for the Museum’s website and social media platforms, and present / publish material at conferences.

The Graduate Intern may also be asked to assist with visitor evaluations and promotion of the ‘The Wild Atlantic – Sea Science’ gallery and outreach events. Part of the Graduate Intern’s duties will also be to note any maintenance or repairs needed to exhibits and bring them to the attention of the director or relevant staff members.
