Job Purpose

To assist in the daily operations of the dairy farm, ensuring the health and welfare of the livestock, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting the efficient production of milk. The role requires hands-on work with animals and equipment to ensure the smooth functioning of the farm.

Key Responsibilities (but limited to):

Animal Care

    Assist in the daily milking of cows, ensuring equipment is used correctly and hygiene standards are maintained.

    Feed and water livestock according to the feeding schedule, ensuring nutritional requirements are met.

    Monitor the health and wellbeing of cows, including identifying any signs of illness, injury, or distress, and reporting them to the Farm Manager.

    Assist with calving and the care of newborn calves, as needed.

    Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments under the supervision of the Farm Manager.

    Assist with the herding and movement of cows between fields and milking parlours.

Farm Maintenance

    Clean and maintain barns, milking parlours, and other farm facilities to ensure high standards of cleanliness and biosecurity.

    Maintain and repair farm equipment, fences, and gates as needed.

    Assist in managing feed stocks, bedding materials, and other supplies to ensure proper inventory levels.

    Help with pasture management, including the moving and maintenance of electric fences and feeding stations.

Milk Production

    Ensure milk quality by following proper milking procedures and hygiene protocols.

    Assist with monitoring milk production levels and reporting any deviations to the Farm Manager.

    Maintain records of milk output, feed consumption, and animal health as required.

General Support

    Follow health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for both employees and animals.

    Assist with other general farm duties as required, including seasonal work such as haymaking or harvesting.

    Support the Farm Manager in managing animal welfare standards and compliance with farming regulations.

Key Skills & Competencies

    Animal Husbandry: Basic understanding of cow behaviour, health, and nutrition.

    Milking Skills: Familiarity with milking procedures and equipment.

    Attention to Detail: Ability to notice health or behavioural changes in livestock and adhere to hygiene and production standards.

    Physical Fitness: This role requires physically demanding tasks, such as lifting, bending, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

    Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with other farm staff.

    Communication Skills: Able to effectively communicate with farm management and report any issues promptly.
