There is one permanent whole-time vacancy available in the Substance Misuse Service in the South East. This post is a regional post and the base will be confirmed at job offer.

A panel may be formed as a result of this campaign for Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (Addiction Services) from which current and future, permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled.

The purpose of this Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (Addiction Services) post is to:

Deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Midwife Manager 2 Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008.

Caseload

Patients – adults over 16 years of age who are pregnant and known to the Substance service and or attending Maternity Services in 4 sites;

Waterford

Wexford

Kilkenny

South Tipperary.

The purpose of the post is to integrate further the maternity and addiction services and to provide education and support to women who use drugs or alcohol or who are drug dependent/alcohol dependent during pregnancy. This specialist post will address the need for liaison between the maternity and addiction services.

Pregnancy offers a unique opportunity for engaging with women who misuse substances. It is an opportunity to improve compliance with ante-natal care and attendance, as well as to address the problems associated with substance misuse. Such clients are at increased risk for hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, psychiatric and social co-morbidity, including depression, homelessness and domestic violence.

The Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (Addiction Services) will work between the midwifery/obstetric services and the drug treatment services to ensure that the patient is followed comprehensively in both services and that good communication exists between both teams.

The post involves attendance at ante-natal and post–natal clinics, Neonatal Intensive Care Units/Special care Baby Units where babies are being detoxified and drug treatment centres within their area to follow up with patients It also involves encouraging patients to attend for ante-natal and post-natal visits, follow up for family planning post delivery and working closely with social services and Public Health Nurses (PHN) around potential child protection issues in the early post-natal period i.e. up to six weeks following the birth of the baby.
