Global challenges regarding energy and climate change, the environment, health, food safety, technology and renewable solutions, use and conservation of land and natural resources, and development of the bio-economy, requires greater effort. On 1 January 2014, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and the University of Life Sciences merged and became -NMBU, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. NMBU has 1700 employees and 5200 students, and is currently located on two campuses - Ås, about 30 km south of Oslo, and Adamstuen in Oslo. In 2020, the new research- and education-building for veterinary science will be completed and all of NMBU will then be located at Campus Ås.

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant PhD-position non-permanent full time for three years related to Timber Engineering.

 

The Faculty of Science and Technology (Realtek) has 130 employees, about 1,100 students and 60 PhD students. The faculty offers bachelor, master, and PhD degrees in natural sciences and engineering in the fields of environmental physics and renewable energy, building and architecture, water and environmental technology, machine, process- and product development, geomatics, and educational sciences. The workplace is in Ås, which is 30 km from Oslo.

 

 

Research project

Around two decades ago, there were early signs in various parts of the world of a renaissance in use of timber as a general-purpose construction material. Cross-laminated-timber (CLT) is a prime example of a new type of wood construction product that replaces 'dirty technology' post-industrial construction materials like reinforced concrete (RC) with clean and sustainable alternatives.

In recent years, there has been increased activity in Norway regarding the use of massive timber in multi-story buildings with "pure" timber structures - a contemporary example emphasizing this growth is the eight-story massive timber towers build at the NMBU campus in Ås - or in combination with other materials and products (hybrid system). However, Norway is still missing a consistent domestic production of CLT panels; currently most of the CLT panels used are imported from other European countries. In addition, construction practitioners in many cases lack sufficient knowledge of how to properly take advantage of the structural properties of the CLT panel in design for static and dynamic actions (e.g. seismic actions in western regions in Norway), leading to inefficient use of the material.

 

The main goals of this research project are related to both technological and production aspects of CLT construction, for example, use of local wood raw material and timber species, strength modelling of CLT, application of massive timber elements with diagonal boards, application of specialized wood based materials. Other areas requiring significant scientific development are modelling of the structural system using CLT elements in combination with other materials, for example, capacity model for CLT shear walls for lateral seismic and wind loads, composite structures with CLT for floor elements, modelling and design of CLT connections.

 

The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.
