The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate in Wheel/Rail Tribology. The post is an opportunity to join leading railway engineering and tribology research teams within one of the top Engineering faculties in the UK. It will also involve industrial collaboration with LB Foster, a leading supplier of Top of Rail Friction Modifiers to the railway industry in Europe and North America. We require a skilled researcher, ideally with experience of tribology testing and the wheel/rail interface. This post supports a collaborative project funded by the Federal Railroad Administration in the US between The University of Sheffield and the Virtual Vehicle Research Centre in Graz, Austria, aimed at developing a model of Top of Rail Friction Modifier effects in the wheel/rail interface. The work at Sheffield will focus primarily on experimental characterisation of the friction modifier performance and establishing inputs to the model that will be built by the Virtual Vehicle Centre. You will hold or be close to completing a PhD in Tribology. You will have experience in critically reviewing and evaluating research, carrying out friction tests. An understanding of wheel/rail tribology would be desirable. This post is fixed-term for 12 months and reports primarily to Professor Roger Lewis. Mechanical Engineering has been a major discipline in the University since its foundation in 1905. The Research Excellence Framework (REF, December 2014) placed the Department within the Top 5 for Mechanical Engineering in the UK. The Department currently has 54 members of academic staff who support the learning and development the undergraduate and postgraduate student body.
