Descripción de la oferta de trabajo:
Contract - This is a full time , fixed term position until 31st December 2021 Location - This position will be based at the Bay Campus, Swansea Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to study surface functionalization of polymer fabrics and ceramics to create superhydrophilic surfaces and their potential application for viral treatment.
You will join a multi-disciplinary research team at the Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) and work in cutting edge research labs at the Swansea University Bay Campus.
The project is funded in part by Industry and the Welsh Government and is in direct response to Welsh Government targets for rapid response to COVID-19.
In the context of PPE and in building filters a focus will be on creating a functional surface to retain aspirated droplets and trap viruses to make a meaningful contribution to the next generation PPE.
The aim of the project is to apply a chemically functionalized materials to surfaces or directly functionalize the surfaces, combining established expertise within ESRI, with the need to immobilize viruses in filters and masks to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19.
This proposal aims at addressing the issue of “essential infrastructure / equipment”, and also the associated “environmental issues”, that result from the COVID-19 epidemic.
Current surgical-style masks (let alone home-made masks) are not effective for either inhibition of aerosol transmission of viruses through the mask or to immobilize the viruses to ensure no subsequent transfer occurs.
The ability to trap viruses in a fabric designed for breathing is difficult because the filter must allow air transmission while trapping viruses; however, trapping of a virus is difficult, due to its dispersion in micron size water droplets (aerosols), which can pass through a fabric and into the respiratory system.
This proposal addresses both of these challenges, while at the same time overcoming the dual issues of scale of manufacture required for traditional surgical style masks for population of Wales (>2 billion masks/year) and the plastic pollution that will result.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and capable high-quality researchers, from across the whole spectrum of academic grades, who will be able to hit the ground running in the lab.
Their tasks will cover a range of research activities from developing the laboratory experiments, model the potential impacts and design and deploy pilot equipment.
Staff will be expected to engage with research active companies and organisations, both in Wales, the UK and around the world, with a view to developing world leading collaborative research projects.
There is 1 position available for this post and we are seeking talented individuals to undertake innovative research.
