Research Assistant In Additive Manufacturing Using Semiconductor Lasers

The Research Assistant will work within a multi-disciplinary team to help develop a prototype selective laser additive manufacturing (AM) tool based on a parallel array of independently addressable semiconductor lasers and to showcase its capabilities to potential industrial users and research partners.

These lasers switch on/off as the array traverses the powder bed to provide a new methodology for high productivity, high-value AM, offering a number of advantages over incumbent technologies.

Schemes are being realised for both metal and polymer processing based on commercial and research grade lasers.

The post holder will be involved in aspects of optical system design and application of novel lasers within the tool.

The post is funded through an EPSRC Impact Acceleration award and will be based in The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

The successful applicant will work closely with colleagues in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as the EPSRC Manufacturing Hubs in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes and in Future Photonics, and with associated industrial collaborators.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) is respected internationally for its many important contributions in the field of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

It is also home to the UK’s EPSRC National Epitaxy Facility (, having hosted the EPSRC’s mid-range facility for growth of III-V materials for >30 years.

The Department currently has 42 academic staff including 19 Professors and a number of other teaching, research and support staff.

We have a student community of approximately 800 students comprised of undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research students.

Semiconductor photonics research at Sheffield is underpinned by a large concentration of expertise across the Departments of both EEE and Physics, offering an unparalleled track record in the growth, fabrication, structural and optoelectronic characterization of a wide range of semiconductor materials and devices.

It is further supported by state-of-the-art device fabrication facilities and well-equipped photonics laboratories.

Furthermore, close liaison with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as the EPSRC Manufacturing Hub in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes ( further extend the range of research capabilities and expertise on offer within this project.

For further information about the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering go to: and for Mechanical Engineering go to: The post will be best suited to candidates with expertise in additive manufacturing by selective laser melting, preferably having worked on research projects including testing the capabilities of new systems, investigating methods to improve machine capabilities and developing part specific processes.

These skills would be required to tailor the capabilities of our new process to the needs of partners.

Experience in the integration of process monitoring systems within AM tools would be advantageous.

We are seeking a candidate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

A broad knowledge of, and practical experience in the field, of additive manufacturing is essential.
