The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks a highly-talented applicant for a post-doctoral position with focus on market design for demand response resources and integrated energy systems.CEE has received recognition internationally for its contribution to methodological and application-related aspects of modern power system engineering. Our focus is on integration of high shares of variable and partly predictable renewable power production through the design of appropriate market mechanisms allowing for efficient and reliable power system operation, while ensuring a proper redistribution of increased social welfare. We are currently involved in a number of cutting-edge projects for the design and operation of such electricity markets for the generalization to markets for integrated energy systems and for the proposal of new approaches to energy analytics e.g. learning and probabilistic forecasting in high dimensions.The project is to concentrate on cutting-edge aspects of electricity markets with demand response resources, as well as markets for integrated energy systems (electricity, natural gas, heat, etc). This position is mainly funded by two flagship research and demonstration projects (i.e., EcoGrid 2.0 and EnergyLab Nordhavn) in Denmark. The period of employment is one year with the possibility of one or two years extension, depending on satisfactory performance. The start date for the position is at the earliest convenience for the candidate.Responsibilities and tasks The post-doctoral fellow will join the Energy Analytics & Markets group at DTU to contribute to research and demonstration of market based solution to support integration of very high share of renewable power generation in future energy systems. The successful candidate is expected to propose, validate and support demonstration activities related to the following specific activities:
- Market design for demand response resources: As a part of the EcoGrid 2.0 project, emphasis is to be placed on novel flexibility and balancing market design which allows demand response aggregators to participate with “asymmetric block offers” in order to accommodate both the response itself as well as the potential rebound effect. This market framework may include different trading floors, including mid-term market stage for optimally providing distribution-level flexibility needs, and another short-term stage for efficient transmission-level flexibility provision. Offering strategies for demand response aggregators in this market may be proposed and analysed. Opportunity is given to test these developments through a real demonstration platform operational on the Bornholm island, Denmark.
- Market design for integrated energy systems: As a part of the EnergyLab Nordhavn project, synergies among different energy sectors (more specifically, electricity and heat, but possibly also gas and hydrogen), which is essential for realizing the long-term goal of renewable-dominant energy systems in Denmark. In particular, we aim to develop a market for integrated energy systems (possibly accounting for community aspects and peer-to-peer exchanges), and then to test its performance through a real demonstration platform to be deployed in Nordhavn, Denmark. In view of the project context and for the purpose of the demonstrations, close collaboration with a number of Danish and international industry actors (Insero, ABB, IBM, among others) is foreseen.
Qualifications Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent, preferably in electrical engineering, applied mathematics or any other relevant field. A successful candidate will have a strong background in:
- Fundamental knowledge of power system operation, renewable integration, power system economics, integrated energy markets and policy
