In the Section for Proton Conductors at DTU Energy, we are involved in the development of both fuel cells and electrolyzers in the temperature range 60 – 300 °C. Within high-temperature PEM fuel cells, we are among the leading research groups in the world. Electrolysis is a more recent field under expansion in the group.The research approach is entirely experimental and R&D activities take place in close collaboration with industry, e.g. Danish Power Systems, EWII Fuel Cells and GreenHydrogen. Furthermore, there is an extensive collaboration with other companies and universities all over the world.The field of research is electrochemical cells; in particular, development and testing of modified ion conducting membranes. The project is dedicated to materials and technological development for direct conversion of the captured CO2 to a value-adding chemical feedstock such as methanol. The technology will be based on co-electrolysis of water and carbon dioxide in a gas phase electrochemical cell, which is optional towards intermittent operation in order to combine with renewable power sources.Responsibilities and tasksYour main tasks will be development, characterization application of advanced composite membranes for the technology addressed.The membranes to be explored will be protonic and/or anionic conductive based on functionalized polymers and inorganic fillers. Characterization may include microscopic phase homogeneity, hydration and swelling, mechanical and chemical stability, gas permeability and of course in-plane and through-plane conductivity at different temperatures. An electrochemical evaluation of the materials focusing on the interfacial behaviour with catalysts/electrodes should also be considered. Significant efforts will be devoted to ionomer dispersions and membrane fabrication in an industrial size.You responsibilities will be:

  • To re-cast polymer membranes as composites
  • To manufacture fuel cells for laboratory tests
  • To test the fuel cells
  • To perform mechanical and electrochemical characterization of the cells, including the use of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • To manufacture the developed composite membranes at a larger size and volume for the use in the project

The job will be within a newly granted EU project dedicated to materials and technological development for direct conversion of captured CO2 to a value-adding chemical feedstock such as methanol.QualificationsCandidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent, and:

  • Your PhD degree is preferably in chemistry, physics or materials science
  • You have experience with testing and characterization of electrochemical cells
  • You have good skills for practical work in the laboratory
  • You have good communication skills in both written and spoken English
  • Experimental experience with polymer electrolyzers or fuel cells, especially cell making, is a strong advantage
