Project Description

The PhD project aims to explore the integration of PtX technologies into district heating networks (DHNs) from multiple perspectives. This comprehensive project is structured around four primary objectives:

  • Objective 1: Firstly, delve into the physics of electrolyzers, then assess the technical viability and efficiency of harnessing waste heat from these technologies for integration into district heating networks, utilizing system design and experimental validation.

  • Objective 2: To design and validate a dedicated software tool for simulating DHNs, with a focus on integrating emerging PtX technologies. This software will facilitate in-depth analysis of economic dispatch, optimize investments, and model energy flows, thereby supporting strategic planning and operational efficiency in DHNs.

  • Objective 3: This objective aims to assess the economic viability and environmental advantages of integrating waste heat from PtX projects into DHNs. This analysis will cover the dynamics of heat pricing and its impact on providers and consumers, evaluate the cost savings, necessary investments, and payback periods across stakeholders, and quantify the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Objective 4: This objective focuses on utilizing machine learning (ML) to enhance demand forecasting, optimize system operations, and comprehend market dynamics in DHNs. It includes creating ML models that can accurately predict heating demand by considering factors like weather, consumer behavior, and economic indicators. Furthermore, it involves applying optimization algorithms to identify the most efficient and cost-effective strategies for waste heat recovery and distribution. Lastly, it entails analyzing market dynamics to uncover opportunities and challenges associated with integrating PtX projects into the energy market, including understanding regulatory impacts and market acceptance.
