Overall project description

You’ll characterise the thermal properties of soils, comparing in situ and laboratory measurements. Taiwan offshore wind farm case study.

Offshore wind farms are connected to the transmission grid by submarine and underground cables. The operation and long-term stability of the cables depend on the electrical cable design and installation conditions. In installation, the soil thermal resistivity is one of the most important parameters for the cable to dissipate heat in the environment. The soil thermal resistivity depends on the soil type, moisture, grain size, density, depth and temperature along the cable route. The temperature of the cable depends on the interaction of ground conditions, burial depth and loading with ground conditions being often the most uncertain set of parameters. A large amount of literature, studies and samples are being gathered as the wind farm population grows. However, conflicting information make it difficult to establish reliable design parameters due to soil heterogeneity, difference in boundary conditions and representative element volume in the laboratory and in the field. This requires a comprehensive review and fundamental understanding of the problem to establish a methodology for selecting reliable design values and develop recommendations for the surveys and planning activities.

 

Detailed project description

The soil thermal resistivity obtained from laboratory and field test results will be analysed with respect to the main soil parameters, specifically soil type, grain size, density, moisture, depth and temperature along the cable route, comparing the analyses with published literature and studies available. The influence of the difference boundary conditions and representative element volume for laboratory and field results will be investigated by, among others, numerical modelling. Upon elucidation of the fundamental soil behaviour the accuracy of the results will be obtained and the soil heterogeneity evaluated. The interpretation methodology established will be summarised in guidelines to be used in future projects.

The projects key activities will be:

  • Review latest information and developments in the field
  • Review the available field and laboratory test results for Taiwan offshore wind farm
  • Numerical simulations of laboratory and field test conditions
  • Summarising the interpretation methodology in guidelines
