Job Advert: Do you want to help shape the future of the world's energy? Nuclear fusion, the process that powers The Sun, can play a big part in our carbon-free energy future. The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and is one of the world’s leading fusion research laboratories. Our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow’s power stations. The Power Plant Technology Group are responsible for all aspects of fusion power plant design and operation. The safety analysis of proposed fusion plants and their environmental impact and licensing is a major component in the integrated design of a fusion power plant. We are seeking a pro-active nuclear safety engineer or technologist who can contribute to the development of fusion power in an environment that involves systems and materials that are unfamiliar to fission-based nuclear power. Working with other teams of design engineers, material and integration specialists in the CCFE Technology Programme, the incumbent will initiate, manage and conduct studies on the safety aspects of fusion plant over the complete lifecycle, including decommissioning and waste management. The analysis of the impact of alternative designs on plant safety, environmental consequences (including recycling) and regulatory compliance will be a major part of the role and the incumbent will be required to work with the design teams to advise on design decisions, technical and logistic matters. CCFE currently plays a leading safety role in the EUROfusion DEMO programme and the incumbent will be expected to augment this role and retain it into the future. The incumbent will be required to report to Senior and Executive levels, providing advice on strategic and regulatory matters relating to fusion. Essential Aptitudes and Experience · Masters or (preferably) doctorate in relevant science or engineering Knowledge of nuclear safety principles and approach, and common safety analysis techniques. · Familiarity with radiological safety. · Good communication skills, written and spoken, particularly ability to explain safety approach and requirements to non-specialists in a constructive manner. · Demonstrable experience of managing complex projects with multiple tasks and controlling budgets. Desirable Experience * Broad knowledge of all main technologies related to fusion power. * Demonstrable strong team leadership and project management experience, preferably with an international context. * Understanding of nuclear technology, neutron and radiation behaviours, techniques of nuclear analysis, issues associated with activation. · Involvement at the design stage of a large complex project (preferably nuclear). · Control of a significant budget (order 1 M€ per year).
