The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and is responsible for operating the JET experiment, the largest fusion facility in the world. JET is embarking on a series of campaigns leading up to experiments with deuterium-tritium fuel which we hope will set new records for fusion power production and yield important information for the prediction of ITER`s future performance. These will be intense and challenging experiments and the measurement of plasma ion temperatures will be crucial to the interpretation of the results. Charge-exchange spectroscopy is the only technique that can provide a measurement of the ion temperature profile in JET, but the analysis of signals from the plasma core has become particularly challenging since the removal of carbon components from the machine and the installation of a tungsten divertor. The JET spectroscopy group operates the core and edge charge exchange diagnostics. The core system has just been upgraded to allow simultaneous recording of impurity and fuel ion spectra to improve the measurement capability. The group also operates a high resolution X-ray spectrometer that can measure the average core nickel impurity temperature. There will be a close synergy in the analysis of these three measurements. We are seeking a diagnostic specialist to be responsible for all aspects of the upgraded core impurity charge-exchange system, from calibration and alignment, control room operation, through to the analysis of ion temperatures, flow speeds and concentrations. The appointee will collaborate with visiting scientists to advise them on how to optimise the charge-exchange measurements during their experiments. They will also collaborate closely with colleagues within the group in the joint analysis of measurements and publication of results. Key accountabilities/responsibilities include: -To be responsible for the operation of the JET core impurity charge-exchange diagnostic -To provide analysis and interpretation of charge-exchange measurements -To propose and develop diagnostic enhancement and novel analysis techniques -To participate in tokamak science experiments on JET and other machines Knowledge skills and experience Essential -Demonstrated experience in spectroscopy, optics and/or atomic physics -PhD in a relevant area of physics or equivalent expertise in experimental physics -Excellent oral and written communication -Fluency in IDL, Python and/or Fortran -Be a good team player with ability to work effectively as part of the Spectroscopy Group Desirable -Familiarity with charge-exchange spectroscopy or other complex spectral analysis and lineshape fitting -Familiarity with Linux/UNIX systems Special requirements: During operations, JET operates a two-shift system (6:30-22:00) and some shift work will be required in this role.
