A permanent full-time position as Senior Engineer is available at the Department of Physics.

About the position:

The position is associated to the Fluid and Interfaces Laboratory at the Section for Condensed Matter Physics.

The tasks are connected to conception, realization, and maintenance of experimental devices and apparatuses (optics, mechanics, electronics, interfacing) in the domains of geophysics, biophysics and material science.

Tasks:

  • In cooperation with scientist in charge: define, draw, purchase parts, assemble and program scientific instruments
  • In cooperation with scientist in charge: define need, get overview of available equipment in market, and decide whether to purchase or build
  • Responsible for health and security measures in the laboratories, including safe treatment of chemicals
  • Keep instrumentation computers updated with software, drivers and anti-virus and purchase and install new computers when needed
  • Order, install and maintain scientific equipment
  • Order or oversee that students order consumables, tools and smaller pieces of equipment and maintain the laboratory tidy
  • Keep overview of equipment available in the laboratories and have it serviced when necessary
  • Possibility of travelling on the field (geological field trip) or to participate to experiments on large scale facilities (synchrotron, neutron source)

Qualifications:

A Master's degree within physical or chemical sciences is required. A PhD degree within physical or chemical sciences is advantageous.

Main technical competences required:

  • Mechanical instrumentation, conception and drawing of mechanical parts
  • Physical measurements and sensors interfacing using a programming language such as Labview
  • PC based data acquisition (including imaging systems, acoustic sensors, displacement sensor, force sensor, optical imaging)
  • Advanced optical methods (RICM, TIRFM, optical sectioning, confocal microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, optical tweezers, single-photon fluorescence)
  • Fluent written and spoken english

It will be an advantage if the candidate in addition has experience with:

  • Installation and security of high pressure systems (40 MPa), under high temperature (200 to 1000°C)
  • Experience with electricity and electronics for scientific equipment
  • Sample preparation methods for geological samples and microsystems

Personal skills required:

  • Ability to work in a well-organized and resourceful way
  • The successful candidate must thrive with independent development tasks, and at the same time work well in a multi-disciplinary team
