The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Sheffield is one the leading engineering faculties in the UK, consisting of seven departments. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Sheffield was rated in the top five in the UK in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014) when accounting for research profile and volume. Applications are invited from enthusiastic researchers/engineers to participate in an exciting program of Research and Development for Digital Nuclear Reactor Design funded by Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategies. The overall aim of the ambitious program is to develop solutions to accurately model reactor thermal hydraulics, and predict active and passive, single and two-phase flows and regimes. The purpose of this is to aid the design and development or evaluation of future reactor designs, using different cooling fluid media. The program is a collaboration between Universities of Manchester and Sheffield, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Frazer-Nash, EDF Energy and Westinghouse. You will work closely with a large team of academics, engineers and Research Associates from the consortium and will be responsible for the development of smart models for nuclear reactor components such as the fuel channels and the reactor containments using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Such models will make use of the latest development in high performance computing (HPC), advanced mesh generation techniques and turbulence modelling to make a step change to the approaches currently adopted in the industry. You will attend regular project meetings reporting your progress and contributing to discussions in other project areas. You will travel regularly to STFC (Daresbury Laboratory) and Manchester. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in computational fluid dynamics or have equivalent experience, have a good knowledge of Linux is essential. It is desirable for candidates to have a good background and experience in one or more of the following areas: mesh generation, turbulence modelling, programming, nuclear thermal hydraulics, and a good understanding of flow physics. The post is available to start immediately and is fixed term for 22 months. This contract may be extended and is subject to funding. Due to the tight time scale of the project, we will aim to arrange interviews within two weeks of the closing date. Fixed term for 22 months. Closing date: 17 July 2017.
