Research project

A fundamental problem in plant biology is how plants orchestrate their shoot architecture. A surge of recent research focuses on how annual plants regulate branching, and existing models represent some distinct herbaceous model systems. In contrast, virtually nothing is known about the processes that regulate branching in woody perennials. In the woody perennial Populus, additional layers of regulation are likely to be present due to the structural complexity of the axillary buds, and the unique feature that they pass through winter(s) before activation can occur. The current project investigates the molecular control of communication during axillary bud activation in Populus, placing it in a cell and tissue context.

Main tasks

  • Establish and carry out experiments with Populus ramets.
  • Decipher mechanisms involved in branch activation.
  • Participate supervision of a PhD student
  • Initiate and facilitate publication and dissemination
