Job description:

Two post-doctoral research fellowships are available at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo, where the projects are led by Associate Professor Andreas Carlson.

Position 1: The development of mathematical models and numerical simulations of cell membrane dynamics. More specifically, it will address the basic mechanochemical processes that regulate one of the most fundamental communication pathways in cell biology - the encapsulation and internalization of liquid and transmembrane cargo at intracellular membranes. The position is for 3 years and funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The project work will be conducted in close collaboration with experimental cell biologists in the group of Professor Harald A. Stenmark at the Oslo University Hospital.

Position 2: This project concerns the development of programmable cell-like compartments, where we will develop mathematical models and numerical similation to determine the bio-physical mechanisms necessary for synthetic cell motion, engulfment and de-activation. The position is for 2 years or 3 years but with teaching obligations at the UiO:LifeScience initiative. The project is funded by the UiO:LifeScience initiative and in close collaboration with Dr. Irep Gözen (synthetic membranes), Professor Harald A. Stenmark (cell biology) and Dr. Gry Oftedal (philosophy).

Requirements and qualifications:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and determined individual who can work both independently as well as in the context of a team. The successful candidate is capable of conceptual thinking, is looking forward to learning new techniques, has good communication skills and is well organized.

Experience in multidisciplinary research and knowledge of basic methods in membrane modelling, biophysics, numerical simulations of PDE's and/or fluid mechanics is highly beneficial.

Potential candidates must have completed or about to complete a PhD degree in physics, biophysics, applied mathematics, mechanics or similar, with publications in internationally well-regarded, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Applicants with publications in press are also considered. Starting date for the position is flexible, but 01.09.2017 at the latest.

Interested persons should submit the following documents.:

1.) A concise application letter explaining your motivation for this position (max 1 page).

2.) Curriculum vitae including a list of publications (max 2 pages).

3.) A document with a list of names and contact information of at least three individuals who will provide letters of recommendation on request.

4.) Up to 4 publications the applicant wants to share with the evaluation committee.

If the position is not specified, applicants will be evaluated for both.
